David Lawson Johnstone

I found a pile of interesting old boys' books on michrofiche by David Lawson Johnstone and others. Top is The Paradise of the North a Story of Discovery and Adventure around the Pole, illustrated by W. Boucher, London: W. and R. Chambers. This originally appeared in James Henderson's Young Folks, Vol. 34, No 945, 5 Jan. 1899. William Boucher began illustrating in the 1860's on penny dreadfuls such as James Malcolm Rymer's Edith the Captive, and had a long stint as a cartoonist for Judy and Henderson's publications.

Next is The Mountain Kingdom, a narrative of Adventure, London: Sampson, Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, 1891. Johnstone's first work, when he was eighteen or nineteen, appeared as The Discovery of the Mountain Kingdom (in 2 parts) Young Folks, Vol 32 No. 873, 7 Jan 1888.

The White Princess of the Hidden City, illustrated by W. Boucher, London: W. and R. Chambers, 1898. I couldn't find the first appearance of this story but it may also have been from Young Folks.

The Flying Legion, by George Allan England, (an American) frontispiece by P. J. Monahan, Chicago: A.C. McClurg and Co. 1920

Blake of the “Rattlesnake”; or, the Man Who Saved England by Fred T. Jane, London: W. Thacker and Co., 1898
