Perils of Pauline



The first cliffhanger was The Adventures of Kathlyn, featuring Kathlyn Williams in 1913. A famous and influential predecessor was What Happened to Mary? with Mary Fuller, an Edison actress, casting its spell on audiences of 1912. The Perils of Pauline (1914) featured Pearl White whose adventures were promoted by newspaper serial.

Masters of the Feuilleton

Masters of the Feuilleton by Ladbroke Black from T.P.'s Weekly 20 Jun 1913. This article mostly deals with the Harmsworth newspaper and magazine serial authors. Convict 99 was written by the team of Marie Connor Leighton and her husband, boy's author Robert Leighton. In 1898 it appeared in book form illustrated by Stanley Wood. Ladbroke Black was author of The Poison War published in 1933 by Stanley Paul Co. He was also one of the many Sexton Blake authors for the Harmsworth story papers.

The Girl with the Silver Eyes



The Girl with the Silver Eyes by Dashiell Hammett, illustrated by Bud Briggs, was serialized in the Vancouver Sun, 21 Nov 1936. Although advertised as a "new detective thriller," the story originally appeared in Black Mask in June 1924, and was the sequel to 'The House on Turk Street' from the April 1924 issue.

King Cobra



King Cobra (1933) by Mark Channing. King Cobra began as a Daily Mail serial and was soon issued in book form in London by Hutchinson and in Philadelphia by Lipincott. Other thrillers featuring the adventures of Colin Gray were White Python, The Poisoned Mountain, and Nine Lives. What ever happened to the illustrated newspaper serial ? Bring it back ! The inkwork is signed but difficult to identify.
