Vaughan Shoemaker, winner of two Pulitzers was known among his confreres as the “gospel cartoonist of The Daily News.” One day an aspiring cartoonist asked him how he began a cartoon. “On my knees,” he replied, “with a prayer.” Shoemaker spent a lot of his spare time giving illustrated lectures in American Sunday Schools and working with Christian charities.
