Teaching Made Easy

This anonymous caricature from The Examiner, 16 Jan 1831, may be the earliest example of an editorial cartoon ever published in an English newspaper. On the right the hangman holds out the ragged coat of his latest victim. The significance of this was that the clothing and boots of the 'turned off' malefactor were inherited by the hangman to be displayed or sold to the public as an extra perk of the job.
