More Australian Comic Strips

In 1946 the Sun Herald boasted on its masthead that the newspaper was in it's 116th year of publication. The top strip, Shaggy, by Gould, from July 4, 1945, featured a comical dog. In 1946 staff cartoonist Eyre Jr. was the most prolific of the home-grown comickers. Eyre Jr. drew The Types, editorial cartoons, and ads for Kellog's Corn Flakes. Three daily strips from America were featured, Penny by Haenigson, Mr. & Mrs., and Vic Flint. Penny would be displayed on the front page of the Sunday comic supplement for many years, a very popular comic down under.

I always think long and hard about posting racial cartoons, and most often end up deleting such posts, but in some cases History trumps my sensitivities and I feel something is important enough to take notice, thus Bosun and Choklit. In this case Choklit was not the only aboriginal character to appear in comics as you will see in further posts.

  1. Can anyone tell me the name of a comic strip that ran in The Melbourne Age during the 1940s and 1950s: the drawings were of pigs and below the drawings were rhymes? I live in Canada now but my mother used to red this strip every day when I was a boy.
