Early Illustrated Newspapers

An article on one of my favorite subjects, by one of my favorite Victorian reporters, George Augustus Sala, published Dec 6 1890 in the Penny Illustrated Newspaper. John Williams, illustrated top, was Britain's first serial killer, the supposed Ratcliffe Highway murderer. The two bottom illustrations have nothing to do with this post, a photo of Sir John Gilbert in action at Blackheath and an ad for magic lanterns.
